The Sea-Spi (Great Keppel Island)
While at Keppel we were lucky to go on a free tour of the reef on a water-craft called the Sea-Spi. Some Canadians that Michelle and Charles have met are reps for the sea-spi here in Australia and they run tours out on Great Keppel. The craft is a bit like a Jet-Ski except instead of sitting on the watercraft you lay down (and they don't go as fast as a Jet-Ski). When laying down you look through a window that goes down into the water kind of like a glass bottom boat.
Unfortunetly we don't have any pictures of ourselves on the Sea-Spi because those pictures are on an underwater camera which film still needs to be finished and processed. We also didn't get to go on a two-person Sea-Spi but the singles are just half of the one shown which we got off the Sea-Spi website. You get to control the craft sort of like you would a bike for left and right and you also had control of the throttle (forward and reverse). The Spi was powered by an electric motor that was really quiet and had a top speed of about 10 knots (in perfect conditions) but we probably went half of that due to the large waves.
This picture shows the controls and the viewing window really well. Although we didn't see many fish (we did see tons of coral) Kristin was lucky to see a sea turtle swimming under her boat. We also briefly saw a single dolphin that came quite close to Charles (and he was the only one not to see it!) The first thing I saw was a fin coming out of the water and didn't know wheather it was a dolphin or a shark so I yelled to Charles but by the time he heard and turned around it had gone under water again. It was still great to see it though even if only for a short time. All in all it was a great time!!

Sounds like a lot of fun. I would be nervous a fin would not be a Dolphin but a shark!! I don't thing those suits you rented on the last expedition to prevent stings would help in that case. We are knee deep in snow right now so I love to see the water and beaches...summer is coming soon ...I HOPE!! Take Care both of you it will be great to see your pictures and get your advise on what to see if we ever get the chance to go. Cheers!!
