Sydney ...by: Kristin
We have been in Sydney since Wednesday and are just preparing to move on to our next place (where that is, we are not sure yet!), but thought we would share some of our photos from our time in the big city. We were both really excited to be coming into a BIG city (population is equal to the whole population of New Zealand = 4 million!!!) for a couple of days. We were getting a little lonely being the only crazy campers to put up our tent in the rain so it was nice to get into the middle of all the action here in Syd. We stayed in the YHA City Central hostel which was good walking distance to everywhere we wanted to go...the harbour, the rocks, darling harbour, kings cross, paddington. Although, it was a lot of walking. We even think we do more walking in the cities than on the hiking trails!

A grey nurse shark at the Aquarium. They had underwater viewing tunnels so you could get a cool perspective of the marine life....especially the sharks!

Friday we spent the day walking around to different areas in the city....mainly The ROCKS and Kings Cross (the apparently "shaddy" area in town..but most hostels are there). Yesterday we did some souvenir shopping at the Paddy's Markets, spent a little bit of time at the jazz festival and then went with a group from a bunch of hostels to the Aussie Rules Football game. We were cheering for the Sydney Swans (although they lost by 2 points). Still a cool experience and game....even though it rained pretty much the whole time.

The Circular Quay area (where all the ferries and water taxis dock) was a great place to hang out and watch the action of the harbour...There were street performers all over (some didge players) so we enjoyed just walking around. We then walked over to the Sydney Aquarium for the rest of the afternoon.

Next day we spent again mostly at the harbour. We walked through the Botanical Gardens. There were TONS of people out running and exercising....not sure if they were on lunch or on a day off (it was Thursday). We went on a tour of the opera house (to see inside and get some history) and also a cruise of the harbour. We lucked out with awesome weather this day....sunny and warm (well...pants and t-shirt weather!).

The Royal Botanical Gardens (right on the harbour).

Beautiful harbour!
