Back in Australia..Surfer's Revisited and Byron Bay

Returned to Brisbane from New Zealand last Thursday night and stayed with some friends of Michelle and Charles who live an hour north of Brizzy. Got ourselves organized, cleaned out the car, did some laundry and took off on Saturday morning to Surfer's Paradise. Stayed 2 nights there. It was nice but SO BUSY (and this is the off season)...it is a huge tourist destination and has been built up with huge holiday apartments right on the coast....none-the-less we had to see it and experience it. We stayed in a tourist park, across the road from Main Beach but also close to all the action so it was pretty loud (considering it was a Saturday night). Anyways, it was still nice to be back on the beach!

A lifeguard station at Surfer's Paradise, Gold Coast.

On Surfer's Paradise Beach....yes, went for a swim!

At the end of the main Street in Surfer's, heading down to the beach.

We came to Byron Bay on Monday afternoon and it is AWESOME here. Byron (as the locals call it) is a smallish town (6000 pop.) right on the coast. It is known to be a "hippy" town and a place for alternative therapies and alternative medicine, and also a huge surfing town! Also a huge tourist destination but it just seems to be so much more relaxed and chill here....sweet as...

Spent the afternoon walking on the beach and in town at the local souvenir shops. Next morning we had the big plan to get up and watch the sunrise over Cape Byron and the most easterly point in australia main land...but didn't make it until around 8am. Walked up to the light house and hoped to see some whales or dolphins in the ocean as this is apparently a common occurence. However, no such luck....

Enjoyed an afternoon on the beach and then came into town to paint Brendon's Didgeridoo. Another seperate posting and pictures to follow.

I was really worried about coming back to a cold Australia but so far not too bad. It feels like late august summer weather. Coolish nights and warmish days. Apparently it was only 23 yesterday but it felt hotter especially directly in the sun. We are heading south and so time will tell if it gets too cold to camp...hopefully not. We will be in Sydney probably in 3 or four days and then we are heading even more south to Melbourne.

The light house on Cape Byron...one of the strongest in the Southern Hemisphere.

On the other side of Byron Bay...can't remember the name of the beach. There were tons (maybe 40) surfer's out.

Looking out for the whales and dolphins...but nothing!

Swimming at Byron Bay..it was actually nice and refreshing, not too cold.

The view from our campsite.

Sunset over the bay.

Your pictures are beautiful. It is so good to see them. The sunset is amazing. You are good photographers.
Great to be in Byron Bay eh!!

The view from your campsite was so good. There are not too many campsites around here that could boast that view.
Love,
MOM and DAD
